Description: This photograph depicts the first picnic held by the Ohio Girls' Club of Washington, D.C., held at Pierce's Mill in Rock Creek Park, Spring 1918. Founded in 1918, the club provided women who were natives of Ohio, but lived and worked in Washington, D.C., with the opportunity "of forming friendships, of making their social lives more pleasant, and of entertaining soldiers, especially from Ohio, stationed in the vicinity." Social events, activities for returning servicemen, and supporting charitable causes were among the club's activities. The club disbanded in 1982. Pictured in the first row are Gladys Prince and Esther Shoemaker Wiley. In the second row is Miriam Rhinestone Rominski, and in the third row, Leona Shields. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows the scaffolding where people can climb to view the Serpent Mound in Adams County, Ohio. The serpent mound stretches a quarter of a mile and is the largest serpent effigy know today. The bottom of the mound is clay and rock and the soil covering the rock is four to five feet high. The mound was built on a unique cryptoexplosive structure, causing it to become misshapen over the years. Serpent Mound is located east of Cincinnati, Ohio. It is on top of a ridge that overlooks Ohio Brush Creek. It is a part of Serpent Mound State Park and accessible to the public. It is believed that the area around the mound was inhabited from 3000 BP to 1300 BP. Although the functions of the Serpent Mound is a mystery, it is probably a religious symbol. The serpent has been a symbol of many things, among them, eternity, incarnation of a deity and evil. Excavations of the mound have found pottery fragments, ashes, burnt stone and some animal bones. Description: Dated ca. 1940-1949, this photograph shows the inside of Canter's Cave, looking up to the forest floor above. Canter's Cave is located in Jackson, Ohio, on the east side of Little Salt Creek. The "cave" is actually two natural rock shelters, Echo Cave and Indian Cave, created by a stream that runs through the area, slowly carving away the rock and lowering the ground level. Remains of mammoth, mastodon, and other prehistoric creatures have been discovered at Canter's Cave, as well as many common woodland animals, some no longer found in Ohio today, such as elk, buffalo, and panthers. Prehistoric American Indian peoples, such as the Hopewell, as well as modern American Indian tribes and early European settlers, inhabited the area. Description: Three well-dressed young men pose for a portrait near a large rock formation at Fort Hill. Fort Hill Earthworks and Nature Preserve is a 1300-acre, heavily-wooded tract located near Hillsboro in Highland County, Ohio. Including Fort Ancient and Spruce Hill, Fort Hill is one of three large hilltop enclosures in the southwest part of the state. The site's 50-acre earthwork is enclosed by nearly 1.5 miles of walls and sits at the crest of a particularly steep hill above Ohio Brush Creek. The walls follow the hill’s irregular outline just below the crest and are punctuated by 33 irregularly spaced gaps or gateways. Fort Hill was likely erected by people of the Hopewell culture somewhere between 100 B.C. and A.D. 400, more as a ceremonial precinct rather than a defensive position. The Hopewell timeframe is further suggested by materials recovered in the 1940s and 50s during fieldwork at a habitation site in the valley below the enclosure. An absolute date of AD 306+/-58 was later determined through hydration dating of an obsidian biface fragment recovered in the 1950s, further establishing an overall Hopewell presence at Fort Hill. There are hiking trails to the fort and the preserve itself can be accessed from Ohio’s Buckeye Trail from where it crosses the Preserve. The site, which is managed by the Arc of Appalachia for the Ohio History Connection, is open year-round except during a controlled hunting season in the fall. View on Ohio Memory.
